The Art of Detailing

There is nothing to compare with the pleasure of driving a spotless shiny car. The best way to keep your vehicle look in its best shape is to have it regularly detailed by professionals. They know exactly what needs to be done and have the experience and expertise to spot areas that need special attention. You can do the detailing yourself, but doing it properly is a more complex and time-consuming process than most people are actually aware of.
Key steps of detailing
Detailing is a step by step process and needs to be done in the right sequence for the best results.
  • Wash the vehicle thoroughly: Use the 2-bucket wash method (One bucket for water only – a rinse bucket – and the other bucket for a soap/water mixture – a wash bucket), to prevent the paint from getting scratched. The old wax should be removed and the best way to do this is by using dish soap. If the engine bay needs to be cleaned, this should be done before starting on the body.  (In Some areas of California washing of vehicles is not allowed at private residences)
  • Do not use rough cloth to dry the vehicle: This will scratch the paint of your vehicle. Use a blower to protect the surface and ensure that all the water is removed. If a blower is not available, use two thick soft towels, preferably microfiber. Use one for the general drying and the other for removing any residual dampness.
  • Clay the car: Always use a clean new clay bar of good quality. Ensure that enough clay bar lubricant is used. Do not forget to clay the glass surfaces – windshield, windows and head and tail lamps. Wipe all the clayed areas to remove residue with post-clay spirit. If required, wash the vehicle again after the claying.
  • Use a Xenon or strong LED light: Before beginning the polishing, use a Xenon or strong LED light to find any imperfections in the paint and to locate swirls. If a paint correction is required, use an orbital buffer. Compounds and buffing pads meant for specific corrections required will serve the purpose.
  • Apply synthetic paint sealant/wax: Once the polishing is done, the finish has to be protected. For this either wax or synthetic paint sealant can be used. A sealant is enough on its own, but if additional protection is needed, a layer of carnauba wax can be applied over the sealant.
  • Vacuum, shampoo and apply stain guard: You can now go on to the interiors and fabric. If needed, vacuum and shampoo the carpets using good quality shampoo. Go for fabric/leather treatment that matches the material being treated. Once that is done, apply carpet, upholstery and mat stain guard for a longer clean look. If you use interior trim protectant, ensure that it does not leave a sticky residue that will collect grime.
  • Clean the wheels and tires: Remove the wheels and clean them inside out. Old detailing clay can be used for the preparation. Synthetic sealer will keep the wheels look clean for a longer time. Dress the tires.
  • Use non-abrasive sealant: Use non-abrasive sealant made for glass and hard plastic for the glass surfaces and lamps. This will provide UV protection to prevent color fade.
If the details of detailing sound like a lot to do, you may take your vehicle to a professional body shop or detail specific facility. They will do a perfect job for you. Professional detailing is especially important after a vehicle has been repaired – it makes you realize how fixing a car is one thing and truly restoring it is entirely another.
